A rotary engine is a type of internal combustion engine that's been used to power all kinds of vehicles, from cars and trucks to boats and planes.

The last car that sold with a rotary engine was the Mazda RX-8 which too was discontinued way back in 2011. So, why the Rotary engines died?

Are there any new cars with rotary engines? While it was initially announced that a rotary engine would only be used as a range extender, in models like the 2022 MX-30 Plug-in hybrid, the latest patents confirm that Mazda is, indeed, giving the rotary one last chance, in an awesome sports car.

Mazda Confirms The Rotary Will Return By 2022, But Not In An RX-9

Mazda's European branch announced this morning that the rotary engine will return on the 2023 MX-30 R-EV, set to be revealed on Friday, January 13. The company also unveiled a new logo featuring a lowercase "e" inside a triangle that mimics the shape of a rotary engine.

As opposed to a piston motor which has a Compression and Ignition phase for each cylinder, the Rotary does it all in one rotation of the triangle shaped rotor. The Rotary Engine is very simple. It's a motor design that utilizes way less moving parts than it's piston counterpart.

Accordingly, the rotary engine is a four-stroke engine. One of the specific features of this engine is that as the rotor makes one complete rotation, the output shaft accomplishes three revolutions.

Wankel completed his first design of a rotary-piston engine in 1954, and the first unit was tested in 1957.

Not many people are aware of this, but we're actually still producing the Mazda rotary engine.

A rotary engine is essentially a standard Otto cycle engine, with cylinders arranged radially around a central crankshaft just like a conventional radial engine, but instead of having a fixed cylinder block with rotating crankshaft, the crankshaft remains stationary and the entire cylinder block rotates around it.

This type of engine is also called a €œboxer engine. Cars with V4 engines where the two banks of pistons resemble a V-shape exist but are rare.
