Why did Mazda stop making rotary engines?

Mazda last built a production street car powered by a rotary engine in 2012, the RX-8, but had to abandon it largely to poor fuel efficiency and emissions. It has continued to work on the technology, however, as it is one of the company's signature features.

Are there any new cars with rotary engines? While it was initially announced that a rotary engine would only be used as a range extender, in models like the 2022 MX-30 Plug-in hybrid, the latest patents confirm that Mazda is, indeed, giving the rotary one last chance, in an awesome sports car.
