What caused the Boeing 777 engine failure?

The jet engine fan blade that broke loose on a United Airlines plane Saturday near Denver, triggering a massive failure leading to the grounding of dozens of Boeing Co. 777s, resulted from metal fatigue, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt.

The Boeing 777 was carrying 10 crew members and 231 passengers en route to Hawaii from Denver, when one passenger described hearing an explosion and seeing a flash of flight.

Boeing 777-200ER: The Boeing 777-200ER is the backbone of United's widebody fleet, and thankfully most have been retrofitted with United's new Polaris seats. Boeing 777-300ER: All of United's 22 new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft have been delivered with the new Polaris business class seats.

Members of the Trent engine family are now in service on the Airbus A330, A340, A350, and A380, as well as the Boeing 777 and 787 Dreamliner.

United Airlines says FAA has cleared 52 Boeing 777s to fly again after they were grounded for engine failure. United's 52 Pratt Whitney-powered Boeing 777s have been grounded since an engine failure in February 2021. The airline plans to begin flying the aircraft this month and bring them back gradually.
